Help Youth in Zambia Become Nurses

Dear Lorem,

Ever since Luse Phiri learned about Florence Nightingale in the fifth grade, she wanted to be a nurse. Growing up in a rural town in Zambia, Luse’s family struggled to access basic resources like health care. And this problem is widespread — there’s less than 1 nurse for every 1,000 people in Zambia. Compare that with almost 10 per 1,000 in the United States and it’s clear — there just aren’t enough trained health care workers in Zambia to go around.

Meanwhile, up to 20 percent of Zambian youth are unemployed and can’t find jobs because they don’t have access to education or training.

But ChildFund is helping turn these obstacles into opportunities. In partnership with The MasterCard Foundation, we started the Zambia Nurse and Life Skills Training Project, which is now helping more than 2,000 young people to get the resources and training they need to become nurses. Luse, now 24, is one of these 2,000. She received a scholarship from ChildFund and graduated from the Zambia Nurse program last September.

“Had it been not for ChildFund,” she says, “I wouldn’t have been in this uniform.”

When you give today, you’ll help youth in Zambia as they work to achieve their dreams and make their communities stronger and healthier than ever before.
